Building Healthy Soil: Grow More by Starting from the Ground Up

Healthy gardens begin with healthy soil. In this hands-on workshop, we’ll learn simple, practical ways to build and improve the soil in our own gardens—without spending a lot of money on commercial products.

We’ll explore how everyday materials from around the home can be turned into valuable resources for the garden, including easy ways to make your own compost, create natural sources of nutrients, and make simple homemade soil amendments such as plant-based “fertilizer meals” and calcium supplements.

You’ll get to see how we build healthy soil here at Rancho de Anaya, including our compost pile and vermicompost bed, and learn how these systems can work even in a home garden.

We’ll also have a hands-on project where you’ll build your own simple compost sifter to take home and use as you make your own compost.
