When people think of herbs, they often think of a garnish—a little parsley on top or a sprinkle of basil on pizza.
At Rancho de Anaya, herbs are so much more than that.
They are one of the ways we bring fresh flavor, simple ingredients, and nourishing meals to our family's table every day.
Instead of relying on heavily processed seasoning mixes, bottled dressings, or packaged sauces, we keep a variety of fresh and dried herbs on hand. It's a simple habit that allows us to prepare meals with ingredients we recognize and trust.
We Choose Real Herbs Over Processed Seasonings
One of the simplest changes we've made in our kitchen is replacing many store-bought seasoning packets, bottled sauces, and dressings with our own herbs.
Why?
Because we want our food to taste like real food.
Many packaged seasonings contain ingredients that aren't there to nourish us—they're added to improve shelf life, enhance flavor, add color, improve texture, or simply keep the product from clumping together.
Take a look at the ingredient list on many seasoning blends or bouillon products and you may find:
Added sugars (yes—even in savory products like chicken bouillon)
Maltodextrin
Corn syrup solids
Artificial flavors
Artificial colors
Preservatives
Flavor enhancers
Anti-caking agents
These ingredients may make products more shelf-stable or more appealing, but they aren't ingredients we need in our everyday meals.
We'd rather season our food with herbs, garlic, onions, citrus, and spices than rely on highly processed mixes full of fillers and additives.
For us, cooking starts with real, whole-food ingredients.
Why We Love Cooking with Herbs
Herbs don't just add incredible flavor—they naturally contain vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other beneficial plant compounds that can be part of a healthy, balanced diet.
Many culinary herbs have been traditionally used for generations in home cooking and herbal traditions to support overall wellness. While herbs aren't a substitute for medical care, they are a wonderful way to bring both flavor and variety to everyday meals.
Some of our favorites include:
🌿 Parsley – Bright, fresh, and rich in vitamins A, C, and K.
🌱 Oregano – Bold and flavorful, perfect for Mediterranean-inspired dishes.
🌿 Rosemary – Delicious with roasted vegetables, potatoes, breads, and meats.
🌱 Thyme – Wonderful in soups, beans, roasted vegetables, and chicken dishes.
🌿 Sage – Perfect with squash, butter, stuffing, and roasted vegetables.
🪻 Lavender – Adds delicate floral flavor to teas, baked goods, and desserts.
🌼 Calendula – Bright edible petals that bring beautiful color to salads and teas.
Herbs Bring Our Meals to Life
Herbs are one of the hardest-working ingredients in our kitchen.
Most mornings, we sprinkle fresh chives, parsley, oregano, or thyme over scrambled eggs before serving breakfast.
When we're roasting zucchini, squash, potatoes, onions, or carrots, we toss them with olive oil, garlic, and generous handfuls of fresh herbs before they go into the oven.
Fresh rosemary, thyme, oregano, and sage become simple marinades for roasted chicken and vegetables. A little olive oil, garlic, lemon, and herbs are often all we need.
Our soups almost always begin with herbs. Whether it's vegetable soup, chicken soup, or beans simmering on the stove, herbs create layers of comforting flavor that make every bowl taste homemade.
Fresh herbs are also mixed into homemade salad dressings, herb butter, dips, pestos, rice dishes, pasta, sandwiches, and fresh garden salads.
The more we cook with herbs, the less we find ourselves reaching for bottled sauces or seasoning packets because the herbs provide all the flavor we need.
Crispy Herb & Cream Cheese Stuffed Squash Blossoms
One of our favorite ways to enjoy the abundance of summer squash is by stuffing the blossoms with a creamy herb filling and cooking them until they're golden and crispy. This recipe is easy to customize with whatever fresh herbs you have growing in your garden.
Ingredients
For the filling:
8–10 fresh squash blossoms, gently cleaned with stems and stamens removed
8 oz cream cheese, softened
2–3 tablespoons chopped fresh herbs (mix and match your favorites)
1 clove garlic, minced
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon black pepper
Suggested herbs:
Chives
Parsley
Basil
Thyme
Oregano
Rosemary (finely chopped)
Sage
Dill
Don't be afraid to experiment! Every herb creates a different flavor profile, so use whatever is growing in your garden or available at the farm stand.
For the coating:
½ cup all-purpose flour
2 eggs
1 tablespoon water or milk
1 cup panko breadcrumbs (optional for extra crunch)
Olive oil or avocado oil
Directions
1. Make the filling
In a small bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, herbs, garlic, salt, and pepper until smooth.
2. Stuff the blossoms
Carefully spoon about 1 tablespoon of the filling into each squash blossom. Gently twist the petals closed to keep the filling inside.
3. Coat the blossoms
Place the flour in one shallow bowl.
Whisk the eggs with the water or milk in a second bowl.
If using panko, place it in a third bowl.
Lightly coat each blossom in flour, dip it into the egg wash, then roll it in the panko breadcrumbs. (For a lighter coating, simply dip the floured blossoms into the egg wash and cook without the breadcrumbs.)
Pan-Fried
Heat about ¼ inch of olive oil or avocado oil in a skillet over medium heat.
Cook the blossoms for 2–3 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy.
Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.
Air Fryer
Preheat the air fryer to 375°F.
Lightly spray or brush the blossoms with olive oil.
Arrange them in a single layer, leaving space between each blossom.
Air fry for 8–10 minutes, carefully turning halfway through cooking, until golden and crisp.
Serve
Serve warm with a garden salad, sliced tomatoes, roasted vegetables, or your favorite homemade marinara sauce.
Rancho de Anaya Tip: We love making these throughout the summer using herbs picked fresh from the garden. No two batches are exactly alike, and that's part of the fun. Try a classic combination of parsley, chives, and thyme, or create your own blend with rosemary, oregano, basil, sage, or dill. Fresh herbs are one of the easiest ways to make simple, wholesome ingredients taste extraordinary.
